Who Owns Nissan?

Nissan has been highly regarded for its innovation in the automotive sphere. The Japanese brand consistently strives to create vehicles with advanced technology, safety systems, and features to stay ahead of competitors. Nissan’s commitment to quality, reliability, and innovation is evident in its various models, many of which are available in our new inventory. However, the question stands: who owns Nissan?

History of Nissan Motor Corporation

Nissan came to fruition in 1911 by US-trained engineer Masijiro Hashimoto. The first vehicle the then-called Kwaishinsha Motor Car Works Company produced was the DAT, standing for the company’s three investors. Later in the 30s, Nissan started to make smaller vehicles that would become the iconic Datsun. Soon after, the company adopted the Nissan trademark. Now, Nissan’s headquarters are in Yokohama, Japan, but the company has expanded to sell and produce vehicles worldwide.

Owners of Nissan

Nissan has been part of the Renault-Nissan Alliance since 1999 when the company saw a drop in sales. With Nissan struggling financially, French car giant Renault created the alliance and took the majority of ownership over the Japanese brand. In 2016, the Renault Group acquired Mitsubishi, creating the current Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance. Currently, Renault is the biggest shareholder in the company.
